Here are some questions that a friend (Josh) came up with. We were brainstorming questions to ask for a sort of group discussion. I came up with like one of them, so I can’t take any credit for the questions. But I think they’re very good questions that everyone should think about. I’m thinking maybe I’ll do a series of posts on these, taking one a post. I might only get through one of them and then discover I want to move on to something else. But if anyone has anythoughts on these, please by all means post an answer to any or all of them in the comments. Here they are, for you to ponder.
what is Christianity?
What are we supposed to do with our lives?
what’s the point of life?
what does it mean to be a Christian?
is that the same as what makes you a Christian?
on a scale of 1-10 how confident are you that you would go to heaven if you died right now?
how often do you read your bible?
what does God mean to you?
what does God want you to do with your lifewould you say you’re living your life the way God wants you to at this point?
do you think God wants you to do what you want to do?
is what you want to do what God wants you to do?
It’s amazing how the seemingly simplest questions, can be so complicated. For me personally, it seems like many of these questions don’t have verbal answers. What is Christianity? I can’t put it into to words. It’s more than a religion, it’s more than just what I do… what I am… It’s not just a way of life, it is life. It’s not just hope, it is The hope. It’s not just a purpose, it is The purpose. You can make many pretty statements describing it, such as, it’s a light in the darkness, it’s a shield for the weak, it’s a path for the hopeless, but even those vague answers, only begin to scratch the surface of everything it is. It is something that you can only explain to those who have it, and even then it is with few words, and many nods of acknowledgment, and sighs of remembrance. How does one describe color to the blind? But even this isn’t quite vague enough. Imagine this, imagine describing sound to the deaf.
What is Christianity to me you ask? It’s everything, it’s the only thing. What you’re imaging right now, as what you think I am talking about it’s… that… and a million times more.
what is Christianity?
I really don’t know…
What are we supposed to do with our lives?
That’s a good question. The chatechism answer is to glorify Godand enjoy Him forever… For me, well, I don’t know how to do that, so all I can say is whatever God tells me to do…
what’s the point of life?
The point of life… to learn, to grow, to be a tool…whatever God wants to use me for.
what does it mean to be a Christian?
Meaning acting as a Christian ought? God is love, and greater love has no man than this, to lay down his life for his friends…so serving others in every part of life?
is that the same as what makes you a Christian?
Hmm. No, I don’t think so. I *am* a Christian because God chose me and instilled His Spirit within me…
on a scale of 1-10 how confident are you that you would go to heaven if you died right now?
10.
how often do you read your bible?
It varies…
what does God mean to you?
Everything. I can’t get more specific than that really and still cover it….
what does God want you to do with your life?
I have no idea
would you say you’re living your life the way God wants you to at this point?
No….I’ve still got alot of growth to do. I mean, God is patient, and I know God doesn’t have unrealistic expectations, but… God is perfect and perfection is far away from where i am.
do you think God wants you to do what you want to do?
No. God wants me to be happy, but that joy should come (and can come) from doing what God wants. Even though it’s frequently not what I want.
is what you want to do what God wants you to do?
Does my soul long for God’s plan, yes. Do I frequently ask for and strive for things that God doesn’t want, oh yes. I don’t quite understand that question….
Hmm. interesting. Some of those I hadn’t quite thought about yet… thanks
